Zen-Wu Japanese-style Planes

Japanese-style hand planes. These ship not fully set up. Japanese plane setup is traditionally done by the user, and we preserve that practice. If you are new to Japanese planes and want a plane ready to use out of the box, consider a Western or Chinese plane instead.

The blades are urade-fuyo (裏出不要): they have no hollow on the back, which means they can be sharpened like any other flat-backed plane blade, without the traditional hammering-out step (uradashi) as the blade wears back. Urade-fuyo blades are uncommon because they require a very flat blade back from the factory, a standard Zen-Wu holds to.

Blade: ZW-V1 steel, dovetail-laminated into a titanium alloy body. ZW-V1 gives the edge retention of a powder-metallurgy steel while remaining keen in both kireaji (切れ味, cutting feel) and togiaji (研ぎ味, sharpening feel).

Dai (台, the wooden sole): Japanese white oak, naturally seasoned, harvested and made in Japan.

Lead time: 2 weeks for 65mm, 10 to 14 weeks for others.
