Zen‑Wu Kanaban

The Kanaban (金盤) is a ground-flat hardened steel plate for fast metal removal during tool setup and repair. Sprinkle diamond powder or your chosen grit onto the surface, add a drop of water or oil, and the resulting slurry cuts through factory grind marks, high spots, and uneven backs far faster than any water stone.

The traditional first step for flattening a chisel back, truing a plane iron, or bringing a neglected tool back to true — before moving to stones for final polish. Ground flat to 0.005mm (under 0.2 thou), with softened edges for safe handling.
